Our activities
Evxinos Pontos Stockholm is a cultural association where our primary work is to preserve our Pontian Greek culture, which contains our history, our antique dialect, our dances and music, our customs and manners and to work active for the international recognition of the Pontian Genocide. All this work is based on volunteer work and the association is in need of people who are interested to work with our goals.

Dance lessons. The biggest section of our activities program is our dance groups which today have about 45 children, teenagers and young adults. Through dance and music, we are automatically working with several parts of our culture like traditional dresses, our dialect and our 3000 year old music.

Our dance groups are divided in three sections, the little, the middle and the big one. The three sections are divided per age so that all members have correct lessons with their equals. For the dance section, we continuously invest in new, handmade traditional dresses from Greece so that all our dancers have the right equipment for their performances and appearances.

Our dance instructor Dina Fraggidou is working volunterely with teeching out our Pontian dances for more than 17 years now and is a member of our association since its foundation in 1984. Except that, she is a member of our board and has the post of being responsible for all dance groups. We have sent Dina to different dance and music seminars in Greece and Germany so that she can have all the right information to pass on to our dance members. For the same reason, are we cooperation with other Pontian associations so that we can have an effective exchange of information about organisation of the dance groups. From time to time are we inviting dance instructors from other associations to enrich our dance skills.

Seminars and workshops. As the biggest Pontian association in Scandinavia it is our duty and responsibility to inform our sociaty about our Pontian identity, our history and our culture. We do that by organising different seminars in Stockholm for our members and everyone else that is interested. These seminars are occasionally held in Swedish and English but usually in Greek.

We also invite people who have extended knowledge about the above mentioned areas to hold our seminars so that we can offer the best possible information for those who attend them. The poeple we invite can be everything from dance instructors to musicians and historians. The main activities about the Genocide are held in association with the official memorial day of May 19th.

We also organize workshops for groups and individuals that are interested where we present everything that our associations works for. These workshops are held locally and with our own information material. Through the years we have organised these kind of workshops in the Swedish Parliament, Stockholm City Hall, Greek association in the greater area of Stockholm and Uppsala and in Greek media like radio, magazines and newspapers.

Culture activtities and parties. Of course we also organise Pontian parties too. We have them as an entertaiment for our members and friends with live music and good food. Of course parties are an oppurtunity for our dance groups to perform for a bigger audience. Except that, our dance groups appear in different cultural events such as the Pontian European Festival and of course in events celebrating the Swedish and the Greek National Holidays. We are also present in most of the local cultural events and in other associations and organisations.

Book and art excibitions are other examples of our cultural activities. We have created several presentations through the years where the main theme has been our Pontian culture. We have presented everything from books and maps to art and ancient coins. All presentations are always accompanied by traditional Pontian food and desserts so that we can present our culinary art too.

Recognition of the Genocide

We Pontian Greeks have a rich 3,000 year old history behind us filled with culture, big education centers, trade cities, ports and high quality of living. But it's also filled with dark sides where the period between 1915 to 1922 was the darkest of them all. It was the period where the Ottoman Turks carried through one of the world history's cruelest genocides.

This Genocide has today systematically been erased from the history books and we Pontian Greeks are working hard to keep the knowledge about it alive. One way to do so is to bring this issue to a national and international level and demand from the world to regognise it for what it is, a Genocide, because Turkey has systematically for 95 years denied that this every happened. The recognition of the Genocide is our association's only political issue on our agenda and we are cooperation with everyone that is for a recognition despite race, religion or political side.
